The square lies silent in the night. A few hours ago, the chimes of this small village’s bell tower rang out, echoing Hilda’s final words: ‘We have complicated the concept of evolution, and our future hinges on this complexity’. We are at the foot of the mountains, and several times a year groups of people from all over Italy come here to come together around a shared desire to build more forward-looking community relationships. On that sunny afternoon, whilst the show was being set up, we were accompanied by the words – sometimes addressed to us, sometimes to the sky – of a man on the balcony, confined to a chair. He has to live in a chair; he cannot come down, but looking out over the square still allows him to reach out to those who come by. His words were welcoming and cheerful. We carry this openness in our hearts as we set off on our night-time journey home, leaving the now-empty square to the wind that sweeps across it, and imagining it tomorrow morning once again filled with his voice.
