Calderara di Reno, 4th of April 2025
Here at the Casa della Cultura, during the afternoon set-up, the large glass window – which tonight will reflect the image of the witness – offers a glimpse into the lives of those who have chosen to leave their homes. Two young lads are doing wheelies on their bikes, whizzing past grandparents and parents waiting for the children to come out of school, whilst three girls repeatedly jump up against the wall of the Casa, pushing off with their feet in search of a handhold. At last they manage to grab hold, pull themselves up and squeeze through the dressing room window. They start smoking, in high spirits, then one of them presses her nose against the glass to look inside. She sees me, says something to the others, and all three burst out laughing. They wave to me, then turn away. I see them silhouetted against the light, miming the moves of a dance routine in the cramped space of the window recess, balancing on the ledge. The sunlight behind them is blinding. It’s one of the first real days of spring. When I step outside to have a smoke myself, I hear two women speaking Arabic in hushed tones. Roberto tells me how, at the Casa, they continue to work to create opportunities for dialogue and mutual understanding. Despite the spectre of public funding cuts, despite the climate of fear and mistrust that is growing ever more intense. Tonight, ‘We did it!’ is part of the ANPI’s ‘Resistenze’ programme. Many here are resisting; many of us are resisting, ‘snatching joy from the days to come’.
